Death By Audio show was great, good sets all round. This was the first show for Moving Stills who have members of Busy Signals. Super tight. I actually filmed a song or 2 for each band but this internet will take days to upload those right now. Met some cool people at this show, good to see the Aussies too. UV Marky and Greg Bailey met Keanu Reeves earlier after watching Point Break. I think i saw Bruce Willis but can't confirm.

So i just got here after 25 or something hours of flying and it feels good to be away from two of the biggest women in this country elbowing me from seats 15 D and F. The flight from LAX to JFK had Friends on repeat and i believe 15 F enjoys Ross the most.

I was so impressed with the New Wave radio station on the flights- Hungry Like A Wolf followed with Psycho Killer, Uncontrollable Urge, Kids Of America and Love Shack. Keep the party goin' United Airlines! Ye-aah!

I got shit all to report so far, but if you happen to be in this crazy city Wednesday the 15th- i suggest you get in touch and take me to this killer show at The Standard Hotel. Australian Invasion!

Tim "The Maggot" "Dundee" Scott's been smashin' it in the past year or so since he came back from Japan. Writing for Mess & Noise, Three Thousand and punk press Stained Sheets he's been talking up the good and cutting down the fat. Good dude.

So Tim's put together a killer line up with some of my favourite local and interstate bandz. Can't wait for The Mammaries, Australia's only Mummies tribute band- i assume. I cannot express how pumped i am for Peewee back in Melbourne either. What a party, "Carbonas but a bit less 'dude' sounding". I'd say i'm a strong member of the Bloody Hammer cheersquad too, what a band. If you don't go to this i don't know what to say. This is going to be 'Flip Out Good'.

Stained Sheets releases are few but welcomed like finding that $10 note in your jacket you can't explain. Previous issues have all lead to further probing of contained subjects which include the likes of Venom P. Stinger, The Bitters, Modern Convenience, Kurt Vile, The Flecks etc.

This issue is #4 and extended to 32 pages (still free) featuring interviews with 1950's Melbourne R'n'R party band The Blue Bops by Scott Campbell, NZ-now-Sydney jangle-pop Garbage & The Flowers by Cooper Bowman, Manic New Jersey Brat punk Home Blitz, frantic Tampa Bay noise punk Neon Blud, daydream beached out Sonny & The Sunsets all by Tim Scott as well as 4 or 5 others worth a look-in. SUPER WILD HORSES - Fifteen LP launch

Super Wild Horses released their debut LP on friday, it's called 'Fifteen'. They've made up 300 copies with green, pink or black screen printed covers and it's been pressed on white vinyl. I got the green one. Been waiting for this album for AGES. Just like their first EP, it was recorded by monsieur Mikey Young of Eddy Currrent Suppression Ring. SWH are currently doing album launch shows 'round AUS and i've heard good reports, of course! The band has the LP coming out on Hozac in the States and it's out on Aarght! Records in Australia. Get it now or cry later.

You can read a recent interview with them, the questions aren't so great but the answers are good.

The Hard-Ons new album is a fierce beast of a record, it's 40 minutes and 19 tracks of their usual assortment of pop, surf, death metal and punk. Hard-Ons new album is called 'Alfalfa Males Conform Or Die Once Summer Is Done' and it's been out for a month almost i believe. I hadn't seen it at Missing Link so it kind of slipped my mind. I just saw their interview in Beat plugging tonights show, it's $15 and they're being supported by Fangs Of A TV Evangelist and Useless Children.

Pissing On The USA, 2010!

Followers, I'm currently booking myself a trip to the United States for this September. It's looking like i'll be in New York around September 14th, Memphis around the 21st and back to New York on the 28th before flying back home on the 5th.

(This was my face when i realised i could visit the States this year.)

I'll be in New York to buy records, see gigs (WEEN is playing on the 17th!!) and try to find Stu Spasm of Lubricated Goat- an ex-Aussie hero of mine. I'm also looking at buying a guitar while i'm there too or possibly in Memphis.

Hey, so i just noticed i started this blog over a year ago. It's been a good way to keep myself entertained during downtime at work. It's also scored me a few free cd's and it's help me to keep in touch with what's going on in music around the world. I like to think of this blog as a good resource for people in Melbourne to see whats happening and for people elsewhere to research Melbournes music scene.

Also i don't know if anyone out there would be interested but lately i've started scouring recent uploads of worthy records on blogs. I've been taking the download links and putting them in an email to myself while i'm bored at work. If you want me to send you these (i wouldn't do it more than weekly) then send me an email and i'll start up a bit of a mailing list for downloads of new and classic records. Free of charge.

Had i had the internet in the past fortnight i would have advised peeps to go to the Espy last night to see Twerps, Beaches and Circle Pit. It was cool going to the Espy again, it'd been awhile. Must remember to use that camera of mine again.

The Tote, Redux!

When the The Tote closed in January i was really curious to see what other venues would step up to the plate. I saw myself going to the The Birmy, Old Bar, Yah-Yah's and The Empress alot more. Having it closed made many people see just how good it was. If i was asked what i missed the most it'd have to be sitting in the front bar eating pizza during Total Doughstruction. Or maybe walking in from the rain to see Black Flag on the shitty little tv and hearing Deaf Wish on the jukebox. I've been going to the place since 2004 when i was just 14 or 15 for the Ska-B-Q shows.

So to show your love, go in for a drink tomorrow as it's the first day it'll be open for the public.

This is what it looks like under the stairs now, looks good to me.

These are the current lease holders: Sam Crupi, Jon Perring and Andrew Portokallis.

These guys also run Yah-Yah's, Bar Open and Pony.

Here's a statement written today from Bruce Milne:

"When I announced the Tote was shutting the doors in January, I was certain it was the end of an era, certainly the end of the Tote. I didn’t count on the overwhelming community reaction to the news.

That the Tote is reopening is a result of that reaction and the efforts of so many thousands of people that demonstrated, signed petitions, wrote letters and let their feelings be known. It’s the result of a lot of hard, behind-the-scenes, work by FG4LM and SLAM that has affected some real change in the way Liquor Licensing and the government treats live music in this state. There’s still a lot to be done but the future for live music looks a lot brighter than it did a few months ago.

I’m very happy that Jon, Sam and Andy have taken over The Tote. They went out on a limb and took over the licence without any firm guarantee that the high risk license conditions would be reversed. Their accountant must have told them they were crazy.
The Tote will be different but in lots of good ways. As it has under previous owners, The Tote will evolve. Just like Melbourne music. It will continue to be run by music lovers. Many of the old staff can kiss the dole office goodbye as they have been re-employed. It will continue to be a second home for music lovers.

It’s a simple formula – have a beer, watch a band, chat with friends, moan about what should be on the jukebox. As Wally Meanie said, “It’s not rocket surgery!”

I'm such a drunken fool!
I was fiddling with my camera while R.H were on and managed to delete all the photos i'd taken during my time in Sydney. I bought a bunch of records, saw some bands and drank big with my main man Nathan.

I saw King Khan & BBQ Show do their second last ever performance- at the Sydney Opera House no less. It was a strange show compared to the night previous at the Corner Hotel in Melbourne. Melbourne was a pretty regular show- get drunk and dance for a few hours. The crowd at the Sydney show was dead, they refused to boogie. Then, KK&BBQ didn't play as good. After the show a bunch of hung around Opera House with King Khan drinking and smoking. Then he kind of freaked out and BBQ was telling me he wasn't interested in playing with KK anymore and that he was acting like a rockstar, "As if he's in Kiss or something". Then we drank at Bar Broadway till 4. If you're interested in reading some tall tales by KK, read this. It's an account of his time at the Opera House.

Deaf Wish are calling it a day this Saturday as Nick Pratt aka Soul Boy is moving further west to Perth. He's opening up a cafe with his woman i hear. Good luck Nick! Also playing is Teen Archer and The Stabs (They have some killer new tracks). Really going to miss seeing Nick and Jensen out-heckle each other.

I've heard they have a lot of new recordings that will hopefully see the light of day in the near future.

If you don't go to this show, you should move to another city.

This Friday 1000 Pound Bend is hosting Heterodoxia for the Next Wave Festival.

Heterodoxia is a one-off show inspired by “A fascination with rodeo culture and the pageantry of masculinity”.

Michael Meneghetti is the brains behind our operation.

Pub Footy!

Followers, today is the first game day of Pub Footy!

Unfortunately for me i'm stuck doing a last minute shift at work in my cubicle cell and watching a stinkin Yankee's game.

I have some bets on though,

It's going to be a close first game with The Tote against the Eye Gougers. The Tote won the rounds last year and so they're the favourites but with Tim Scott added to the East Brunswick Eye Gougers roster, there will be blood! Also with no bar, The Tote don't seem so fierce at the moment...

Game 2 will be interesting. Jensen and Co. at the Bar Open Bats had a good season last year and have their eyes on the prize for this year. Jensen has surely been getting his team ready for this. The Pain are new and i think they will be crushed, though i'm unaware of their line-up so we could see some young wizardry.

Now Game 3 is going to take my "Oblivian bet" that the Unicorns are going to be chewed and swallowed by the Lions. Just look at their teams roster. Bosma, Wil Wagner, Mix Master Gaz, little Jimi 'O' Crack and Nellie Jackson. This is going to be a tough one for Unicorns better halves to watch.

Grong Grong - The Anal UFO Tour

This is a weird band. I can't get my head around them to be honest.

So Grong Grong were around years ago playing and scaring the town folk of Adelaide. During their absence they played in other groups fighting the mainstream. Grong Grong played a few reunion shows last year with good reports so i'm excited about seeing more of them. Good supports for the shows too - ZOND are also playing at the Old Bar show.

I haven't got the CD/DVD yet but i hear it really goes beyond the usual lazy re-issue. The DVD is chocked with interviews and live footage that none or most GG fans had ever seen before. I know of a couple of people travelling south from Sydney and Brisbane for this which is a sign that this band is better than this poster would suggest. Also worth mentioning for those who like to boogie for the Old Bar show, Mr. TJ Honeysuckle is Dj'ing. He's assured me to take a good dig through his old records and find the filthiest mess he can. I look forward to seeing this.

We Empty Rooms/Bro Fidelity labels

We Empty Rooms is a small label and distro run by Jem Maloney of Fire Witch/Innapropriate Tough Guy Behaviour/Elise & Jem and he's probably the one making all that noise in the warehouse down the street. He's a great guy and he's got great taste in music. The guy needs his own radio show really.

Bro Fidelity is a smaller label run by Ben Wrecker, a man i haven't met though feel i know through his posts on Mess+Noise.com. He's the drummer for Hotel Wrecking City Traders and has often found himself being used as a hired gun for some big touring bands on the side. Bro Fidelity has been a home for the HWCT records but recently they've released the new Fire Witch cd, "Liars".

I opened the package today i received with the new HWCT 7" and the Fire Witch CD. Haven't had a chance to listen but wanted to give a shout out to 2 of Melbournes heavier stoner bands that don't suck. The Fire Witch CD is 2 tracks with a hand screen printed cover done by Jace who spends time riffing in Fangs Of... The CD is limited to 500 (I got #65) and features tracks recorded as far back as 2005 before they went on hiatus. I didn't have time to give it a spin but i'm really looking forward to hitting the repeat function on my cd player when i get home.

Hotel Wrecking City Traders are a band i must little knowledge of. I have seen them a few times and enjoyed their volume and intensity. I have a few things to do this year- one thing is to see HWCT more. This 7" will help secure my interest further i'm guessing. As i'm trying to pass information on about Bro Fidelity and these 2 releases i'm going to re-direct you to Mainframe friend and follower, Danger Coolidge's site over at Unbelievably Bad for an interview he did with Bro Fidelity recently. Of course, while you're over there make sure to flick through to his interview with Jem for W.E.R's as well.

I've been featured in issue 11 with my report on Camp A Low Hum which is a festival in Bulls, New Zealand. I made a large post of photos from it back in Jan/Feb. If you're impressed with my photos i urge you to go to Ben Butcher's blog and look at his. They're incredible!

Batrider - Beaks Tour

The last time i saw Batrider was in New Zealand at Camp A Low Hum. I also went to karaoke with them the night after with some of Love Connection and Milk Teddy. They are a pretty fun bunch. Sarah belted out a wild Mariah Carey number.

Batrider have lived in Melbourne, Wellington, London and i have a feeling they've been hanging out in Adelaide recently.

Lately i've been listening to more Batrider, Love Of Diagrams, The Drones, Milk Teddy and The Clean. Getting softer as the winters kicked in i suppose.

I haven't been to the Lithuanian Club before so i'm keen to check it out. Also Pets With Pets and Woollen Kits are supporting which is rad!

I know that X is going over to the US for the Chaos In Tejas festival and having a send off show with the UV Race on the same night at Ding Dong Lounge. I hate Ding Dong so i think Batrider takes my vote for this one.

The almighty King Khan returns to Australia in June with his partner in crime (and grime), BBQ, in tow. Hand picked by Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson to perform at this years VIVID festival in Sydney, The King Khan and BBQ Show will also make one special stop off at The Corner Hotel in Melbourne.

A performance by The King Khan and BBQ Show is an awesomely surreal experience; a stunning music machine, playing incredible original hits that never end. Orgiastic, anarchic, hypnotic and personal. Blowjobs and blood, pick-ups and puke, dancing and laughing.

So KK and BBQ tickets a "SELLING FAST!" which means, if you ain't got yo ticket yet- you best be headed to THE CORNER site and throwdown the $$. I didn't go to KK and The Shrines because King Khan without BBQ is something i don't wish to experience. They are peanut butter and jam. Oh and to you people that haven't got tickets yet, Royal Headache and Woollen Kits are supporting..!

This footage is from Rowland's last show at the Prince Of Wales on October 29th, 2009. It was the launch of his last album "Pop Crimes". I was smart enough to get a ticket for this and Rowland and band were flawless despite his ill health. This was filmed with 5 camera's around the venue so i'm hoping it will make for a live dvd in the near future. On the few times i saw Rowland he would always make me laugh with his incredibly dry sense of humour. I wish i'd had the chance to see more of him.

So get down early to get the hot records before anyone else, then stick around for a few drinks and catch Spencer P Jones & The Escape Committee at 6pm as they rock the house and help y'all settle in for the night. I don't know what to expect with this show of theirs really but i heard Circle Pit will be playing at some point.
