Bits Of Shit, Brainwaves, Teen Archer & Flesh World

Hey! Tomorrow is the last of 4 stellar residency shows that the Bits Of Shit have done in August at the Old Bar. This last show is going to be sweet with the best line up to date with Teen Archer, Flesh World and Brainwaves on supports. It's also Franca from Brainwaves birthday party too which makes things even sweeter. She don' drink and she don' smoke but do get her a drink of some non-alcoholic description when you see her.

Sunday free shows in Fitzroy

Who went to UV Race last night? Get a tape? Any good? My pal Christina scored me one while i was working late.... Really wanted to see UV Raggers but i will be seeing them in 2 months in NY and in Memphis. Excited! Anyway, tonight everyones goin' down to Northcote Social Club for possibly the biggest gig of the year for Melbtown. Tomorrow Golden Staph are playing with Woollen Kits and The School Of Radiant Living at Yah-Yah's in the arvo-fer F R E E.

Deaf Wish last show, Yah-Yah's Sat 29th

Deaf Wish are calling it a day this Saturday as Nick Pratt aka Soul Boy is moving further west to Perth. He's opening up a cafe with his woman i hear. Good luck Nick! Also playing is Teen Archer and The Stabs (They have some killer new tracks). Really going to miss seeing Nick and Jensen out-heckle each other.

I've heard they have a lot of new recordings that will hopefully see the light of day in the near future.

If you don't go to this show, you should move to another city.

Bed Wettin' Bad Boys - Best Band In Sydney/Worst Band In Sydney 7"

The Bed Wetters were down in Melbourne over the weekend playing shows to launch their first 7 inch release, "Best Band In Sydney/Worst Band In Sydney". That title says it all, they're loose as shit. I asked Ben about them opening for Dinosaur Jnr and he said "Well, whatever happens we're still gonna get paid" and then Nic said "It's not like anyones going to book us shows like this again when they see us".

Kitchens Floor - 7"

I've listened to Kitchen's Floor's first album, "Loneliness Is A Dirty Mattress" a lot since it came out. There's a few bands doing music in a "lo-fi" manner and i generally spit them all back out after first taste. This Brisbane band however seems to sink a bit lo-er than most. They've got a heaviness and rawness that i haven't felt from most other groups in this field. It being on R.I.P Society doesn't hurt either. Oh, good news for Melbourne- they're doing some shows in early March. Sydney, Adelaide and Hobart get some KF action also. Excited.

Eddy Current Suppression Ring - Rush To Relax CD/LP

Eddy Current Suppression Ring are simple goods. Their not like buying from Ikea, no instructions or separate parts needed. Rush To Relax is the 3rd installment LP and comes in 10 tracks. Theres an over analytical review shaking up a stir about how their not pushing the envelope and that they should be taking more risks musically. I won't bother helping you to find this review as it's a waste of your time and mine. If you live in Australia the band will be hitting you're town in March or April (Yes, even W.A). They have a bunch of USA tour dates posted on their Myspace too which should excite those of you Goners.

Teen Archer - Teen Archer 10"

This band has chops. I'd say they really got to me when i saw them at the Flip Out after party at Oxford Arts Factory in Sydney. They blew the place apart and have continued to do so on a regular basis. They've been playing everywhere with everyone lately so if you haven't seen them yet i don't where you've been. They'll be doing the Dinosaur Jnr tour with Deaf Wish so if you're going, get there early and see them make dust of the Corner on March 5th. I took Alex and Gus bowling a few months ago, have a look at the photos and read some here <--

I don't know what happened, i've really slept on this. I've been listening to this one a fair bit and it's just getting better. Their doing some shows on the east coast in March so go see them do the rock thing. Their playing as a super surprise band at a gig coming up soon so if you're a keen bean, get back to me and i'll fill you in. I interviewed Jensen about the album and other junk a month or 2 ago. Go'n read it 'ere!

If this record doesn't come out in the next week i'll be calling Nic at R.I.P Society everyday till i can hold this sucker. The finest band in Sydney, Australia and probably whatever hole you're in. Royal Headache's debut release and my early pick for best 7" of 2010. If you have Golden Plains tickets you'd best get in on time and head for the stage at full pelt for their 2pm set on day one.

The Diamond Sea

This Saturday at The Tote is the second week of Teen Archer's residency. I'm definitely going to this. It'll be the last ever Melbourne show for the Diamond Sea and Gold Tango are playing as well. The show starts at 5pm and it's free!

For the Sydney peeps, there's 2 final shows, one with Street Chant (NZ), The Thaw and The Kill Room at RED RATTLER, MARRICKVILLE.

Then the last show is with Royal Headache, Street Chant (NZ), Southern Comfort at SHOGUNS ABODE.

Teen Archer Interview

Over the weekend Zac found a christmas gift voucher for bowling and took Teen Archer to Crown Casino. We spent the $70 on beers and bowling, it was a good time.

Z: So how long have you guys been playing for now?

G: We started in October last year, so it's like exactly a year ago since we started.

Z: I've noticed you guys play a lot of shows with bands that you don't sound at all alike- you also play a lot of different venues and don't seem to be playing in a certain scene.

G: It just kind of came about as a thing of just being stoked at the fact that we could actually play a show.

A: I think it's because the people that run the shows on the internet are really polite and so people who are offering us any gigs, we'll just sort of take it.

G: And it's only recently that we've started to organise our own shows, so really any good bands we've played with is really by default so we've been lucky.

A: You know the fact that we're overage now has made it pretty cool in that we can have more beer fuelled shows. As opposed to our parents having to drive us to every gig.

J: So are there many bands you guys haven't played with that you want to?

G: Yeah i'd love to see us play with Deaf Wish, actually any of the Flip Out bands really. We're all listening to Royal Headache at the moment.

Z: So i guess Flip Out was probably the biggest show you've played so far, what was it like being involved?

A: Yeah it was a really cool day you know, but it was funny we all kind of had this moment when we watched Pink Reason were we felt our band was just so insignificant under the weight of their heavy avant. Maybe because they have meaning behind their songs.

J: At their Sydney warehouse show, they made a guy pass out. Like we were watching and i was like "Man i feel a bit ill" and this guy actually dropped to the ground. I guess it was just too much for him or something.

Z: You know that's funny because at that show i thought the beer really got to me, that Reches will do it every time.

A: Yeah we were drinking Toohey's New which i hadn't had before and it was alright.

Z: Best gig?

G: We played a house show a while ago that was sick.

A: Yeah that was awesome.

G: We played a show with Useless Children and Super Wild Horses, that was cool too.

A: That gig was particularly good because we saw the other bands do such good sets.

G: It's pretty rare for us to stick around and watch the other bands purely because, well we discussed that eariler.

J: Worst?

G: The worst, yeah i'd been at a staff party at Strike, bowling! There was a huge bar tab and i got incredibly wasted. We were playing at a Streetparty event- Pogo or something.

J & Z: Fuck that.

G: We thought since it was Streetparty we'd be stupid about it and get face masks.

A: Which all broke before we got onstage.

G: Yeah so we ended up playing in our underpants. I broke my bass and amp. I don't know if i broke someone elses amp exactly but it did stop working while i was playing it. So that was pretty bad, especially for me because the other guys were sober.

Z: How did the Streetparty crowd take you?

G: Surprisingly alright, there was a couple of hipsters up the back- arms crossed.

A: There was a few real rowdy kids up front rocking out. One of them came up to me and was like "You guys sounded like Pantera!" and put his arm around me.

G: We get alot of weird comparisons at gigs like, "Oh you guys sound like Blue Oyster Cult! or Turbonegro!" and my mum does it too, she's like "Oh i can hear the blues in that!" and she has no idea what she's talking about.

Z: You guys haven't had Calum on sax in the band the whole time, was that something you wanted to add for a while or did it just happen?

G: We thought about it but it was hard to find the right sax player because their either like classically trained and have the wrong idea or their completely shit and can't play but have the right idea. So luckily Calum falls somewhere in the middle of that.

J: He doesn't play on every song, how do you guys figure out when to have him?

A: Well it's kind of like when he come up with a good line or something.

G: I see it as we have our 4/4 punky stuff and then the more rhythmic bass driven thing and thats usually where he slots in there.

Z: Anything coming out soon?

G: We've got our 10 inch coming out which is being pressed as we speak.

A: And it's gonna be on like swirly textured vinyl which is like the offcuts of other bands vinyl. Which means we got a discount on it, so it's gonna look really cool. I'm just hoping there won't be other bands music on it on bits of it.

J: How did recording go for that?

G: We did it about 8 months ago, we're ready to release something else. But we self funded it so it was really expensive and it was in a particularly expensive studio as well.

Z: And who's putting it out?

G: EXO Records, which has stuff like Bachelor Of Arts, The Night Terrors and Alex's other band Breaker Morant. It was funny because Bachelor Of Arts asked us to play a show and we thought we totally fucked it up but Kody came out after and asked us to go with them.

Melbourne Flip Out '09

I had a great day at Flip Out on saturday. I was lucky enough to be Stage Manager for it. Thanks to all the bands and punters for making it such a sick day. And of course Dan and Johanna for setting it all up and making this happen. Oh! and Rigid for bringing out James Arthurs Manhunt.

There wasn't a band playing i didn't like, but of them all i'd say my favourites would have been:

Flipped Out, Sydney

If you saw my drunken ass in Sydney over the weekend, you'd know i had big fun. To anyone i chased, hassled, fought, kissed or took photos of, you're all total dudes. It was a good time and fast approaching is Flip Out in Melbourne at The Corner Hotel. If i scammed beer or ciggarettes out of anyone, hit me up this saturday. I took over 1000 photos throughout the weekend. For me, The Ooga Boogas at Flip Out and Teen Archer at the afterparty at Oxford Arts Factory were my favourite sets. Also James Arthurs Manhunt, really wish i could have stayed in Sydney one more night to see them, Pink Reason and Carborator.

This is a bunch of photos i took from thursday to sunday. Thank you's to Emilyrose, Nathan and Jez for their hospitality and friendship. Lukus for driving us to the airport. Also Jimi's mum for a fantastic lunch today.

My buddy DREWFUNK has a show on in Sydney at the moment, if you can- check it out at Oh Really Gallery. Cool space, it's out on Enmore road. I went to the opening and then to this bar on Oxford St called Ching-A-Lings. If you don't have anything nice to say (about Ching-A-Lings), don't say anything at all. basically.

Headed to Repressed Records before it shut. Got some nice records.

Back to Newtown, records and goon in the early morn.

Friday was spent drinking beers at the Clare and buying records at Egg and Utopia. Friday night was the Pink Reason Show at Dirty Shirlows then James Arthurs Manhunt at Louies, i actually slept there. It was great, however the daytime drinking and seeing ma friendo's from Melbourne arrive made me giggly. How sick were BED WETTIN' BAD BOYS. I love my shirt. Thanks to Joey Suck It for writing on it, and then drawing a dick on my chest. What a buddy.
